ANR Robinson International Airport Receives ISO 14001 Certification For Environmental Management Systems
Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (The Authority) is pleased to announce the achievement of the ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems. This prestigious award represents the fact that the ANR Robinson International Airport is the only airport in the region that has taken the steps to ensure that operations are environmentally friendly.
The Tobago House of Assembly, in collaboration with the European Union hosted an Awards Ceremony on Friday 7th February, 2014 at the Adventure Eco Villas, in Tobago at which the ISO certification in Environmental Management was awarded to the A.N.R. Robinson International Airport and two (2) other entities.
In the first quarter of 2011, the A.N.R. Robinson International Airport was approached by local representatives from the European Union (EU), who together with the Ministry of Planning and the Economy and the Tobago House of Assembly launched the project and the Authority accepted the challenge.
The overall objective of the programme was to enhance the environmental performance of Tobago by implementing an EMAS (Eco-Management Audit Scheme) that would manage the impact on the environment of the visitor from their arrival to their departure. Some initiatives include an ‘energy consumption’ programme, awareness and training for staff members and installation of sorting bins for collection of recyclable waste.
The Authority is keenly interested in preserving its environment and ensuring sustainability of its resources that would lead to the enhancement of the tourism product in Tobago and guarantee an inheritance for generations to come. The ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems is an achievement that not only benefits the travelling public, but the nation as a whole.
